Jam Master Jay, born Jason William Mizell on January 21, 1965, was a pivotal figure in hip-hop music as the DJ for the legendary rap group Run-D.M.C. His work helped to pioneer the genre, blending rock and rap in a way that appealed to a broad audience. Notable tracks featuring his distinctive scratching and turntable skills include "Walk This Way," a collaboration with Aerosmith, and hits like "It's Tricky" and "Run's House." Jam Master Jay was instrumental in the group's success, contributing to their groundbreaking albums such as "Raising Hell" (1986) and "Run-D.M.C." (1984). His innovative use of samples and mixing techniques set a standard for DJs and producers in hip-hop. Beyond Run-D.M.C., Jam Master Jay was a respected figure in the music industry, known for his mentorship of emerging artists and his role in establishing the Jam Master Jay Recordings label. Tragically, he was murdered on October 30, 2002, in a shooting at his studio in Queens, New York.
